Orlondo Otis Hundley II Launches Grassroots Campaign for Schenectady Mayor

Schenectady native Orlondo Otis Hundley has emerged as an early and unconventional & leading contender in the city’s 2027 mayoral race, building a campaign that blends grassroots organizing, digital outreach, and a focus on local economic realities.

Hundley, a small business owner, artist, and longtime community organizer, is positioning himself as an independent voice in a race that is expected to draw candidates with more traditional political backgrounds. While he has never held elected office, he points to years of involvement in local campaigns, public speaking, and community initiatives as the foundation of his candidacy.

A Campaign Built Outside Traditional Channels

Unlike many candidates who rely heavily on institutional support and legacy media, Hundley’s campaign has taken a digital-first approach. Through consistent outreach across platforms, he reports reaching hundreds of thousands of viewers monthly, with content focused on local policy, infrastructure, and economic issues.

His campaign messaging frequently emphasizes accessibility and direct communication with residents. Regular online meetings, community engagement efforts, and public appearances have become central to his strategy as he builds name recognition ahead of petitioning periods.

At the same time, Hundley has been vocal about what he sees as unequal media coverage in local outlets, including The Daily Gazette, arguing that newer or nontraditional candidates face barriers to visibility despite demonstrated public interest.

Focus on Livability and Local Economy

At the core of Hundley’s campaign is a platform centered on what he calls a “livable Schenectady.” His priorities include:

  • Expanding access to affordable housing

  • Supporting small businesses and neighborhood-based economic growth

  • Improving transportation connections across the Capital Region

  • Increasing transparency in city budgeting and development decisions

Hundley has also spoken frequently about the importance of keeping wealth circulating locally, particularly in upstate communities that he argues are often overlooked in broader state-level economic planning.

Emphasis on Youth, Seniors, and Culture

A recurring theme in Hundley’s campaign is bridging generational gaps in policy.

He has called for increased opportunities for young people through arts, employment, and education initiatives, while also advocating for stronger support systems for seniors, particularly in accessibility and city services.

As an artist performing under the name 97OTIS, Hundley also places a strong emphasis on cultural investment. He frames arts and community expression not only as quality-of-life improvements but as economic drivers capable of revitalizing neighborhoods and attracting regional attention.

Looking Ahead to 2027

The next mayoral election in Schenectady is scheduled for November 2027, with the winner set to take office in January 2028. While the field is still developing, Hundley’s early entry into the race gives him a significant runway to build support.

His campaign reflects a broader shift in local politics, where digital platforms and grassroots engagement are playing an increasingly central role alongside traditional organizing methods.

Whether that approach will translate into electoral success remains to be seen. But as the race begins to take shape, Hundley has already established himself as a candidate aiming to challenge both the tone and structure of local campaigning.
