Aging in Place for Schenectady Seniors
Growing older should not mean being forced to leave the neighborhood you helped build. Every resident deserves the opportunity to age with dignity, independence, and security in the place they call home.
Today, too many older adults are forced into difficult choices because they cannot afford home repairs, lack reliable transportation, or have no access to the services they need to remain independent. My administration will make aging in place a priority by investing in the support systems that allow seniors to continue living safely in their own homes and communities for as long as possible.
Help Seniors Stay in Their Homes
The most affordable and compassionate form of elder care is often helping people remain where they are most comfortable.
I will work to:
Expand home repair and accessibility assistance programs.
Help seniors install ramps, grab bars, stair lifts, and other safety improvements.
Connect residents with trusted in-home healthcare and personal care providers.
Increase access to meal delivery, wellness checks, and household assistance.
Reliable Transportation
No one should lose their independence because they can no longer drive.
My administration will:
Improve affordable transportation options for seniors.
Expand access to medical appointments, grocery stores, pharmacies, and community centers.
Improve sidewalks, crosswalks, lighting, and public spaces to make walking safer and easier.
Explore partnerships for door-to-door transportation services.
Support Family Caregivers
Many families provide care for aging parents and grandparents while balancing jobs and raising children.
I will:
Advocate for expanded caregiver support and respite services.
Connect families with local, state, and federal resources.
Strengthen partnerships between healthcare providers, nonprofits, and community organizations.
Ensure caregivers have a clear place to find information and assistance.
Housing That Supports Aging
Housing should allow people to remain in their community throughout every stage of life.
I will support:
Universal design standards that make homes safer and more accessible.
More multigenerational housing options for families caring for aging loved ones.
Programs that help seniors remain in their existing homes instead of being displaced.
Neighborhood development that keeps essential services close to where people live.
Stronger Communities
And Aging in place means more than remaining in a house. It means remaining part of the community.
My administration will encourage:
Senior recreation and wellness programs.
Adult day services.
Volunteer networks that provide companionship, transportation, and assistance with everyday tasks.
Community centers where older adults can remain active, connected, and engaged.
